Fatty liver disease: The way your breath smells can be a sign of a liver issue

A common sign of fatty liver that you can smell

Doesn’t matter if you are an alcoholic or a teetotaler, fatty liver disease, also known as hepatic steatosis affects all for a different altogether. Being diagnosed with fatty liver conditions means that the organ has stored too much fat over the years that is now interfering with its normal functioning. While heavy drinking is one of the prominent causes of fatty liver disease, people with no history of alcohol abuse can also develop this condition due to factors like high cholesterol levels, diabetes, sleep apnea, underactive thyroid and others. In most cases, this condition does not lead to any prominent symptoms in its early stage, but it is associated with a commonly prevalent sign which is the smell of the breath.

How your breath smells when you have fatty liver

One of the peculiar symptoms of the fatty liver disease is having “breath of the dead”. Also known as Fetor hepaticus, the breath of the dead is a chronic odour in your breath and can be easily distinguished from your normal breath. Smelling of the breath is common after having certain food or in the morning, but with people suffering from fatty liver conditions, it remains throughout the day. The breath may have a distinct sulfur and musty smell throughout the day. It is an obvious sign of fatty liver disease and should not be ignored.

Why does your breath smell in case of fatty liver disease

In case of fatty liver disease, the liver cannot filter the blood or detoxify the chemicals, digest drugs the body ingests, which are the main functioning of the delicate organ. When the liver does not work as it should, the toxic substance that should have been filtered out of the liver in the normal case makes its way to other parts of the body, including the respiratory system. This makes your breath smelly and you can easily distinguish it when exhaling. Dimethyl Sulfide is likely responsible for the distinct smell of fetor hepaticus.
